Root Canal Treatment / Endodontic Treatment

The root canal carries the pulp (a network of blood and nerve cells), which brings the tooth to life.

When there is a damage to the Pulp, either due to Infection { Caries } , or Trauma { Fracture }, the tissue in the root canal undergoes inflammation and produces severe pain.

Root canal treatment also known as Endodontic treatment, avoids extraction of the tooth , in these conditions by removing the infected pulp , from the root canals , followed by filled with an inert material { Gutta Percha} and placeing a Crown over the tooth.

Common Symptoms requiring an RCT:

  • Severe tooth pain, typically relieved by cold water and increases with the intake of hot liquids.
  • Pain worsens when you lie down and reduces when you sit up.
  • Pain stays for a long time after consuming cold things.
  • Swelling around the tooth.
  • Constant tooth pain
  • Pain when chewing.
  • Tooth pain referred to head and ears as well.
  • Tooth sensitivity on consuming sweets.

What happens If Pulp damage is “Not Treated” but “Medically Managed” ?

One drawback of the pulp damage is , at times it gives a temporary relief from pain and discomfort with Medication . So there is a tendency to postpone or avoid the treatment. If the situation continues, the patient may have to undergo an Dental Extraction , losing the tooth for life. The patient may also have to undergo a Prosthetic replacement of the missing tooth .

“Remember, nothing is as comfortable as Retaining our original teeth. I would always prefer Saving the tooth, over Surgical Removal . ”

Root Canal treatment At Prakash Dental Centre

In our centre, all Basic Root canal cases will be managed by Dr.Siva Prakash Dhanaraj . For cases which needs special care our Endodontist , Dr. Savadamoorthy takes over the procedure. The involved teeth are Radiologically analysed , before and after the procedure. Most of the root canals are treated as “Single Visit” procedures , exceptionally when they have severe infection , they may have to come for another couple of visits, which will be decided by our Endodontist.

An Endodontic Device “X-Mart” a product of Densply company, is used, for the Procedure, which gives more accuracy and comfort to the patient, during cleaning and shaping of the root canal . The Procedure is Painless , and for Multiple Root canal treatments , Sedation Dentistry is recommended.

Dental crowns are recommended on all Root canal treated teeth , since there is a strong possibility of the teeth becoming Brittle with time, thus avoiding dental fractures, and again loss of tooth.
